Promoting British Values at Southam, St. James C.E. Primary School
In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in school to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
The Key Values are:
All maintained schools must meet the requirements set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002 to promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. Through ensuring pupils’ SMSC development, schools can also demonstrate they are actively promoting fundamental British values.
In November 2014, the DfE reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
In practice, this means that schools should:
enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;
encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England;
further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures;
encourage respect for other people; and
encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
At Southam, St. James C.E. Primary School, these values are reinforced in the following ways.:
Each year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the charter.
Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a school council which meets regularly to discuss issues raised in class. Council members for each year group are voted in by their class. Recently the School Council have made decisions relating to the replacement of outdoor play equipment, our school motto – “Let Your Light Shine’ and the design for our new website
Children have an annual questionnaire with which they are able to put forward their views about the school.
The Rule of Law
The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies.
Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.
As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.
Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons.
Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
As a Church of England Primary School, mutual respect is at the heart of our values.
Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.
All members of the school community treat each other with respect.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
As the school is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse, twe place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children.
RE and PSHE lessons are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.
Children have opportunities to visit places of worship that are important to different faiths
At Southam, St. James we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
